FAQ
For first time appointments, please arrive at least 5-10 minutes before your treatment time so you have ample time to fill out a consultation form prior to the treatment start time.
Tuina is generally performed with patients fully clothed. We recommend loose sports clothing such as a T-shirt and loose jogging bottoms/sweat pants (elasticated waist). For injuries such as ankles, knees, wrists, elbows and shoulders, we recommend clothing that can be moved easily to expose those areas so that your practitioner can access the area of concern. We also recommend patients to bring socks with them in case compression therapy will be used. Patients should also bring warm clothes such as a coat and/or scarf to keep warm after the treatment to avoid the muscles and tissues constricting from the cold when leaving the clinic.
For first time treatments, your practitioner will start the session with a brief consultation to identify key areas of concern and then invite you to lie on the treatment couch or chair, cover you with a treatment sheet and palpate over the sheet to identify areas of imbalance. Your practitioner will then proceed to treat you with Tuina techniques. Commonly our practitioners may incorporate other modalities into your treatment such as the use of infra/far-infra red heat, cupping therapy, acupuncture or more as appropriate and agreed between your you and your practitioner. Your session will typically be around 60minutes but may be longer if other modalities such as BEMER Magnetic therapy or Compression therapy are added by your practitioner (at no additional charge).
The best way to describe a Tuina treatment is that it can feel like a combination of physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic, sports massage, deep tissue massage and Thai massage rolled into one treatment. Tuina may feel uncomfortable during the treatment if there are areas of tension and stagnation and your practitioner will work with you to try to clear the area and bring back good bloodflow, qi (energy) and fluid to the area. It is normal to feel sore (similar to having soreness after a workout) for up to 3 days after your treatment. If cupping therapy has been included, it is common for cupping marks (peticheia) to be visible on the skin for up to 1 week. These can sometimes feel a little sore (similar to a light bruise) but is temporary and will dissipate over the course of 1 week.
Our practitioners typically prefer to treat first-time patients for 2 treatments spaced 1 week apart to see how the body changes and adapts after the initial first treatment. After the second treatment, they should then be able to advise if further treatment is recommended and if so, how often. For general wellbeing and maintenance we recommend 1 treatment a month to help the body maintain optimal condition and performance.
Tuina is effective at treating many conditions and can benefit most people. If you have any questions or queries please do give the clinic a call and we will be more than happy to assist you.
